The Department of Cultural Arts enhances the lives of residents with theatre, dance and music

The mission of the Cultural Arts Department at the Glenview Park District is to fulfill the artistic needs of the community by offering a broad range of programming, events and performances that provide an interactive place to appreciate, enjoy and participate in the arts.

The School of Performing and Visual Arts at the Glenview Park District offers over eighty classes a season in the following genres: dance, theatre, drawing, watercolor, ceramics, glass fusion, visual variety classes as well as opportunities for individuals to serve as a volunteer with the Glenview Art Guild, Glenview Theatre Guild and the Glenview Concert Band. Our programs are inclusive to all ages and abilities. Our youngest participant is 18 months and our oldest student is a dancer in our Over 50 Tap class who is 85. All of these cultural arts offerings offer up amazing community building experiences for the residents of Glenview and beyond. Our programs engage the community through arts education, free performances and visual arts displays throughout park district facilities, community buildings and parks.

Our students are encouraged to become technically proficient in specific genres of dance, while at the same time, building positive self-esteem through working in groups and also on solo projects.

Some of the classes are listed below:

  • Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Lyrical
  • Hip Hop
  • Adult Dance including jazz, ballet, square dance, belly dance, Latin & ballroom
  • Three Dance Companies
  • A Hip Hop Dance Company called Synergy
  • Competitive Cheer and Poms programs

We have over 400 dancers in our program. The Youngest dancer is 18 months, our oldest dancer is 85. We have two large dance productions a year:

  • The Winter Petite Dance Recital (showcasing our dancers ages 3-6)
  • The Spring Annual Dance Production (showcasing dancers ages 6-85)

Center Studio has several dance companies; Tres Petite Elite (ages 4-6), Tres Petite Elite (7-10), Jr.
Company (10-13), and Senior Company (ages 10-18). We also have a competitive cheer team that competes throughout the Chicago land area as well as a newly formed Hip Hop Caompany called Synergy.

The mission of GTG has always been to offer Glenview (and the surrounding communities) high quality, low cost exposure to theater. For over forty years, GTG has produced Broadway style musical productions and has provided the perfect outlet for talented individuals from Glenview and throughout Chicagoland to share their gifts on stage. GTG has partnered with not only the Glenview Park District, but also the two local high schools, Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South, to house the summer production. What also makes the productions so unique is the addition of a 40 piece LIVE orchestra that performs during every show. Over 3,000 audience members enjoy these annual productions.

Founded in 1985 by Dick Austin, The Glenview Concert Band (GCB) is comprised adult musicians from Glenview and surrounding neighborhoods. While some members are professional musicians, most find a welcome place to continue their love of playing instruments. We play many genres of music: classical, contemporary, popular, marches, and showtunes, to name a few. Auditions are not necessary, but the music we play is not for beginners. The concert band recently performed as the headliner for the Glenview Park District July 4th Twilight Show. GCB does an amazing job of engaging the Glenview community through free performances; providing opportunities for individuals who may not otherwise be exposed to the joys of live music.

The Glenview Children’s Theatre (GCT) is in its 35th year. Children ages 5 through 15 are able to participate in four productions a year. The mission of GCT is to provide extraordinary theatre experiences that educate, challenge, and inspire children in an inclusive and supportive environment, encouraging creativity, positive self-esteem and personal growth.

The Visual Arts programs at the Glenview Park District covers several genres, such as ceramics, water color, drawing, glass fusion and various other mediums. This program is a true paragon in showing how student’s arts can be enjoyed and presented in various ways throughout the community. The Cultural Arts Hall at Park Center is always showcasing our visual class’s current projects.

Our Adult Arts programs have partnered with Wagner Farm, the Grove, the Glenview History Museum and various other business in Glenview to create art for their buildings, logo ideas for events and flyers for various organizations. The Glenview Art League, a recognized organization of the Glenview Park District, sponsors an Art in the Park showcase every summer in Glenview, exposing art to resident and visitors.
