Back by popular demand, The Grove is dedicating one week exclusively for Homeschoolers to experience our hands-on programs! Historical and Environmental Educational programs are available for homeschoolers from grades K-8. For more information or to register for a program please contact Judy 224-521-2105 from February 10-February 18, 2022. Late registrants will be accepted based on availability. Please note that payment in full is required at time of registration (younger siblings 4 and under not participating in programs will not be charged), and refunds will only be given in the event of a program cancellation by The Grove. Please note that masks are required for all programs, and we will follow any new mandates put forth by local governing bodies such as the IDPH or CCDPH.

Blacksmithing
This exciting program takes place in our working pioneer blacksmith shop! Participants will learn how to work with the forge, anvil and hammers that a blacksmith used to make useful household items. Everyone will take a finished project home.
Who: Grades 5-8 (ages 10-13 no exceptions)
Fee: $40 adult + child, each additional child $20 (within same family)

Walk in Nature
What happens to plants and animals in the winter and in the spring? Join us as we look for signs of the changing seasons. We will be walking the trails for a part of this program, so please dress for the weather.
Who: Grades K-3
Fee: $16 adult + child, each additional child $8 (within same family)

This exciting program takes place in our working pioneer blacksmith shop! Participants will learn how to work with the forge, anvil and hammers that a blacksmith used to make useful household items. Everyone will take a finished project home.

Archaeology
Take part in an archaeological dig in this exciting program! Learn about the history of the Kennicott family and life in the 1800s by digging up genuine artifacts excavated from the grounds during the restoration of the historical Kennicott House.

Modified Pioneer Skills
Think your chores are tough today? Learn what life was like for pioneer children—from candle making to weaving, students will experience what it took to be a pioneer first-hand!
Who: Grades 4-8
Fee: 18 adult + child, each additional child $9

Log Cabin
Do you think it’s possible for a family of 6 to live together in one or two rooms? Students will discover what life was like living in a 1850s log cabin, and what children were expected to do—from tin punch to drawing water from a well—these hands-on experiences will make students appreciate the difference between pioneer life and the modern world!
Who: Grades K-3

Life of a Naturalist
Discover who Robert Kennicott was and what being a naturalist means. Participants will also learn about all the different types of animals we have at The Grove.
Who: Grades 1-8

Living Off the Land
Learn how to use what you find in the woods to build shelter, the best way to start a campfire, and how to read signs in nature. This program will end by a campfire with s’mores.

Dynamic Earth
This exciting program explores the forces of the earth! Learn all about land formation, plate tectonics and what makes up our soil. Hands-on activities include rock, mineral and fossil investigations as well as a geology trail walk to discover how glaciers shaped our area.

Reptiles and Amphibians
Come face to face with some snakes and turtles in this fun program! Students will learn about reptiles and amphibians and discover the similarities and differences between them. An identification activity uses a simple taxonomic key and features unforgettable encounters with our residents “herps.”

Participants will learn how to make a miniature quilting project, and take home a kit to complete their project. Learn how to use the different types of tools needed in quilting projects.

What did older children do for fun in the 1850s? Learn all about this as participants will use antique tools to saw wood and drill holes, use life sized Lincoln Logs to construct a log cabin, and enjoy games from the 1850s.

Feathers and Fur
Learn how mammals and birds have adapted to survive in different types of environments. Explore the world of birds and discover beak and feet diversity and the unique characteristics of feathers. Activities with mammal artifacts include investigating fur and skulls. Dress for the weather to hit the trails and look for some of these interesting creatures.

Learn all about the Potawatomi Indian culture and heritage, and the historical ties between this native group and the settlers around The Grove. Pack Your Wagon
Imagine having to load up your car for a trip across the country. Would you be able to pack enough food, clothing and supplies to last for weeks at a time? The pioneers did just that as the moved westward. Work together to determine what’s important enough to bring along and what can be left behind as you pack The Grove’s wagon for the big trip!

Living off the Land
Discover what life would have been like living outdoors and working with your hands much as pioneers would have. Learn how to use found items to build a shelter that can withstand the elements as well as how to build a fire outdoors.

Cross Stitching
Cross stitching is a fun way to create something beautiful. Each participant will receive a kit that includes an embroidery hoop, canvas, thread and a fun project to make.
