Glenview Park District's dedication to sustainable practices grows
GLENVIEW, Ill., Jan. 16 – Showing continued commitment to operate in an environmentally responsible manner, the Glenview Park District announced today it has made the switch from conventional energy to green energy. The entire district will now rely solely on green energy sourced from wind renewable resources.
GPD administrators entered into a contract with Constellation, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to match 100 percent of the park district’s energy use.
The Glenview Park District becomes one of the first in the area to be powered solely by renewable energy. It’s just another way that administrators have worked to become more green. In recent years, the park district also transitioned vehicles in its fleet to propane and installed LED lighting at both Community Park West and Flick Park.
“We have already integrated many sustainable and green solutions in our existing facilities, parks and operation. This takes it to the next level and shows our willingness to be good stewards of natural resources and the environment. The continued well-being of all living things in our community for generations to come is a top priority for the Glenview Park District,” said Mike McCarty, Glenview Park District Executive Director.
The RECs supplied by Constellation are Green e-Energy Certified and sourced from wind energy facilities located in the lower 48 states. Throughout the term of the contract, 100 percent of the electricity the Glenview Park District uses at its facilities will be matched with RECs. Each REC represents the positive environmental attributes of one megawatt hour (MWh) of electricity generated by a renewable power plant, and is retired on behalf of customers wishing to promote their environmental commitment.
“Constellation is pleased to support the sustainability goals of our customers,” said Daniel J. Verbanac, Senior Vice President, Retail for Constellation. “Their voluntary actions align very well with our goal to help reduce pollution, encourage the use of clean renewable fuels and demonstrate a sincere commitment to the environment.”
